This has been going on for two seasons and it always happens the same exact way: The engine starts fine. It runs great at all speeds for as long as I want it to. Then, I anchor for a while (about an hour), restart the engine, and it lacks power. It will often die at idle and won’t get up to speed at other throttle settings. Sounds like it’s missing or not running on all 3 cylinders. But, when it dies it ALWAYS restarts right away. I can always limp back in to the dock. If I'm patient, I can cruise around the lake at about 2000 rpms and eventually, after about 15 minutes, full power and normal operation will resume.
Tomorrow, it will be fine again (until I stop for about an hour).
I have replaced fuel, plugs, replaced fuel filter, cleaned filter screens, replaced gas line and bulb (from tank to engine). Thanks for any help. This is so strange.

Re: Very strange problem

it could be heat soak, try pumping the fuel bulb before and after you start the motor, see if you can get it up to full power. (fuel boiling out of carbs from engine heat) worth a try anyway.

Re: Very strange problem

Could be your throttle advance sensor defective or sticking it depends on what type of ignition system you have. Out of my league on this one..Sorry

WOW........I HAD A 1995 JOHNSON 60 3 CYL.....I HAD THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM, I PUT IN NEW REED VALVES......SWITCHED CARBS.......THEN IT ONLY RAN ON THE TOP CYL......CENTER AND BOTTOM WE'RE DEAD, BUT HAD SPARK AND GOOD COMPRESSION...AND FUEL...LIMPING IT HOME FOR 1/2 HOUR, IT KICKED IN AND RAN GREAT FOR A LONG TIME......THEN STARTED ALOVER........I TOOK DOWN THE CRANKCASE HALF TO SEE OF THE TOP AND BOTTOM CRANK SEALS WERE OK..........AND TO SEE IF THE SEALING GROVES ON THE CRANK WERE OK..........ALL OK........A TOTAL CONFUSING *^$#%$#*&^......I SOLD IT FOR PARTS ..........MR BILL

Re: Very strange problem

Thanks for your responses! Yes, I've tried the fuel bulb before and after starting. Doesn't seem to have an effect. I am suspecting the power pack as I have heard this here and on another forum. Hmmm... maybe I should just get rid of this thing and get a 4-stroke. This engine has been sucking up more money than fuel ever since I bought it.

sounds like a good plan ;) especially if you sunk more money in from repairs then fuel.
