Verado 350 Ignition coil failures

Hi everyone I have twin 350 verados and I have had the bottom ignition coil fail now 4 times. The first time it literally exploded. The most resent time we had just launched the boat and started the motors and the error came up and motor was running rough so turned off removed cover and noticed that only the bottom one was warm to the touch and sure enough, that was the one that was again bad. My mechanic says he hasn't seen this before. The motor is almost 3 years old and this is the fourth time the lowest coil has failed and no other coil on either motor has failed yet. I cant believe that this is a coincidence? Any input would be great!

My best guess: a bad ground connection that's heating it up.

Jeff thanks for the response, I did notice that the base of the coil where the bolt goes thru is metal and it is corroded a bit, but my mechanic says that is not a ground since the coil has three wires to it. Would this poor ground be thru the harness or is it the base?

It might. The mount may serve as a heat sink. Hell; something's doing that to you!

They are pencil coils


Sorry to tell you but, Unexplained issues usually will result with the installation of a completely new engine harness.
