velvet drive trans problem

Hi

I have twin 454 crusaders 1988 with straight drive velvet drive transmissions 2.57 to 1

underway running fine at 2800 rpms then heard a winding/grinding noise and stopped checked out what happened and no movement on the port trans, I can hear it when I put it in forward and reverse just like the noise you hear when shifting (like the starboard side)
is the trans shot or should I be checking something else, fliud is full and pink, if it was shot would I still hear it going into ???

want to remove the trans tomorrow anything I should be aware off ?

thanks to all

When you are sitting at idle with the trans in neutral, boat not moving and no water passing over prop to turn it, does the shaft spin? If yes, does it spin slow or does it spin fast enough to move the boat slightly?

Is the noise you are hearing a whine or is it a chatter?
If it is a chatter you will need to check your engine, These transmissions will make some awful noises if your engine is missing or running rough.

do what Chris asked; but your problem could be the flywheel coupler (dampner) between the engine and tranny. If it breaks down, it will get noisy. When you say pink fluid, is it really red? Pink means water is mixed in.

Hi
after the first noise under way when it stopped working, the noise now is just running noise, just like the other motor and trans, like it is normal but no movement at the shaft, you can just hear it running as if it was normal when shifted into gear??

Do I understand correctly that the tranny seems to shift OK, but the output flange does not move at all in gear?

Before you get a rebuild kit for your trans, Depending on The model, pull the pump off the front of the trans and check the input shaft. If it is rust damaged where the seal rides, it will be cheaper to purchase a used trans then to purchase that new input shaft.

I'd be inclined to remove the "timing plug' in the flywheel cover and assess the coupler's condition before buying parts. either way, assuming the shift cable is fine, removing the gear will likely be necessary.
