Velvet Drive early model

Sorry for all of the transmission posts but...
During the rebuild of my Velvet Drive I found that there are a few parts that are no longer available.

In reading through the manual it says:
(page 52 step 10)
"It is suggested that 1.91:1 ratio models using an O-ring (35) lube oil strainer (34), gasket (33) and three lock plates (23), be reassembled to current standards. To do this it will be necessary to discard the O-ring (35) lube oil strainer (34), gasket (33), three lock plates (23) and six bolts (21). It will be necessary to replace adapter plate (39) with part number 1017-172-001."

My question:
It is "suggested" by the manufacturer not deemed "necessary". Why? Is this an upgrade that will improve the performance and/or reliability of my transmission?

I vaguely recall early changes on the lube filter, going from a primitive strainer to a screen filter. Check with Hale Marine. They will know.

2X on calling Hale!!!

One reason they "recommend" changes is product upgrades that they AREN"T obligated to provide, gratis, to those that purchased the 'older design'. Another is that they have changed the design (usually for economy) and don't plan on supporting the early design.
