Ok, here is the next question (but I still in interested in whether others have seen the salt deposits mentioned in my last post. Because they are there, and as far as I can tell I did everything right.)
I noticed the deposits while pulling the head from one of the engines that lost compression on #4 (2002 Crusader 5.7). Burned exhaust valve, probably from slow closure/sticking due to rust on the stem. Maybe related to the deposits. Maybe related to the fact the boat sits unused in the tropics for six months a year. Anyway, the local head shop says there is not enough metal left to redo the seat. I asked about putting in an insert and they said (I think) that this head has the large valves and there isn't room to put in an exhaust valve seat without getting into the area of the intake seat. I don't know if they are right, or if they don't have the equipment or experience to do the job, or if I just misunderstood the issue and there is something else wrong.
In any case, we are looking for junked heads that might do the job (You can imagine what you find in a Mexican junk yard 1000 miles south of the border!).
So does anyone really know if the story about the difficulty of putting exhaust valve seats into this head makes any sense?
