Hi

Anyone have a way other than NADA t0 determing the Value of my 1998 JOHNSON 4 stroke 70 HP Power Trim ? It runs great up to about 3,000 RPM's and the Evinrude/ Johnson Dealer has determined that the Problem is the ECM and they are VERY Pricey. The Evenrude Dealer offered me $1,000 trade on it towards a new one and I am on the fence as to weather I want a E TEC or a Merc. 90 HP. I see the Trim/ tilt units on eBAy for $500 and the Cowl for $200 and the foot for $650.00 etc Looks like there is money in Parting it out to me. Any help would be appreciated. NADA says $978 in Good Shape.
THANKS

Do you know of anyone that performs boat surveys? They may have other sources to determine value. Of course the book values are based on a good running engine, which you don't have.

So in the 3 examples you've listed for Ebay you have already eclipsed the $1000 trade offer by $350. That sounds like money in the bank to me.

If you go new I'd put my money on the Etec. Right now Bombardier is offering a 5 year unlimited warranty on Etec motors. Of course that ends on Friday April 15 so you have to act fast. But, I think the Etec technology is about as good as it comes for 2-stroke engines.

Thanks Kevin I was able to get $1500 trade in on the motor to seal the deal and I ordered the E-Tec 90 Just in time to get $300 worth of Free Rigging From BRP and the 5 yr Warranty from BRP. I am super excited like a Kid waiting on Christmas Morning.... I have never had a Brand New Boat or Engine as I just hate the First Year Loss on them but I am happy I ordered it and I think I will be happy to have it on the Boat and out Fishing.. I am not that guy who runs by you while your fishing wide open for no reason I like to power down some when near others but I also Like the have the HP there if I need it to get in out of the storms, beat the clock Etc.. I have been fishing a creek mouth and here comes a 250 HP Bass Rig Running 50-60 MPH out of an S turn in the Creek and go about 100 more yards and shut it down and fish, Meanwhile all of us in the creek are trying not to be thrown out of the boat on this guys Wake!

Thanks again. I will let y'all know how she runs next week when they get it rigged out.

$1500 isn't bad at all. You probably could have made a little more by parting it out and selling the pieces online, but that also takes time and effort. If you have the time to do this it can be worth the headache, but you also have to weigh how much your time is worth.

I would strongly suggest you keep a ready supply of toothpicks and dental floss in the boat. You're going to need them to pick the bugs out of your teeth due to the perma-grin you'll have when you run this motor. The ETEC will monstrous low end torque compared to the 70HP 4-stroke. You'll feel like the boat literally jumps out of the water if you nail the throttle from a dead stop.

Good luck, and most of all, get back on the water and get fishing!
