What do you think a 1983 Merc

What do you think a 1983 Merc outboard 175 is worth? Runs decent. Thanks

"I'm in the market for exactly such an engine so have been watching local buy/sell, Ebay and used dealers for just such a motor.

Pre-1985 models (fair looking and running fine), regardless of mfg have been selling for about 1000 bucks, when they do sell.

Most are listed around that 1000 dollar mark but have gone unsold. Mid to late 1990's EFI's are far more in demand in the used market usually going for about 2500. Models less than about 5-10 years sell for between 3 and 5k most of the time. And while that may sound low when a new 175 can top the 15k mark, there is not a huge market for these old, carburated, big engines - at least not one that people are willing to open their wallets too far for (including myself).

Also, your location will have alot to do with the value. At around the 400 pound mark, a big motor is expensive to ship so you are usually looking to sell local. If you are nestled in the middle of a 100 mile streach of restricted horsepower lakes (or new 4 stroke lakes), the value drops further. If you live on big water, you may pick up a little more than the average price..."

"One other note, Merc never built a 175 in 1983. They produced it between 76-81 and then again from 85 on. If you post your serial I can give you the model year which will help if you do put it on the market.

During this model run Merc started using the 2.4L block which is the far more desireable model since even basic parts are still available.

"big" Older engines will most likely need a rebuild at some point to continue using them - so parts availability has to be factored into the price (or at least it will be for anyone looking to buy one). And that is why some engines appear to sell very cheap, they are basically "disposable" due to either no way to fix them, or cost prohibitive..."
