V/p 5.7 Gi TBI engineH harness insulation disintegrating

Hi Gang

The engine wiring harness insulation is coming apart on the individual wires that make up the engine harness. The harness # is 3858131 and is obsolete. I found one for $1200. I would rather convert the TBI setup back to a carb than pay that.

Question: Does V/p have a problem with the insulation disintegrating on this vintage harness?

I have owned and serviced many older Mercs and have never seen this.

i ask because I think I may be wasting my time looking for a used one.

Hi Chris

It's a 1996 5.7 TBI . I have read that a v6 TBI harness will work if you lengthen the lead to the knock sensor and the oil press.

The part no# is 3858131 Volvo/ OMC. I located a new one in Kansas from a boat parts dealer. He told me he wanted $1200 for it. I had a good laugh. I can easily turn this into a carbed motor if need be.

I do like the TBI system though.
