Usual question for this thread - Which model and year?

Hi

I've searched on various site but am having difficulty finding the age of an old motor that I have just bought.

The ID plate is badly worn but the model looks to be Mariner W 15 but the W could be an M and the serial number is 662 S 00492

One site did bring it up as a 1985 M model but I suspect it is older.

Also the fact that it has no charge or lighting coils makes me think it is a W model.

Also it was made in Japan so I think it is probably a re badged Yamaha.

Any help you could give will be appreciated as although it starts first pull and runs well I want to replace the impellor and lower unit/gearbox seals.

Many thanks.

Brian

Here should be a link to your parts catalog for you/your serial number range, http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard-parts/w15-m/66202241-thru-662001845

Unless you're missing a number someplace, using the online serial number chart, I could see where you might be led to believe the engine is an 1985 as that is really close to your serial number range but the 7 at the end is one number to many compared to your serial number of 00492...15 M 662-004927 = 1985, http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/page/608072

The "S" in your number tells you it's a short shaft engine. Running the serial number on a computer system brings the model number up as 7015209 which makes this 15 HP a 1979 engine year.

The service manual part number you'll want to look for/keep an eye out on both online and EBay is 90-83076.

Some basic info about the "work" engine I ran across for you, http://boatspecs.iboats.com/Mariner...ft__W15_Work_Long_Shaft/bpe/43br2236s271m4656

For anyone in the future that has an W (Work) 15 HP model, the following link should be your serial number ranges for parts look up,
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mariner-outboard-parts/w15

Hope this helps, good luck.

Thanks very much for the info it is very helpful.
It's a bit worrying that, on one of the links, that it says it is designed for freshwater as I plan to use it in coastal waters. I guess I will have to flush it out even more regularly.

Looks like dome good stuff on the forums so I'll no doubt be back on soon.

Thanks again.
