"Has anyone had luck in buying used power packs or should you buy new? Does anyone know how long cdi packs last? (Assuming you take the boat out a few hours each weekend.)
I was thinking of getting a spare but cheapest i found is 170.00. I'm afraid if I dont buy for my 1987 50 force, I wont be able to find them later.
Any input would be helpfull on this.
Thanks,
Jeff"

"Jeff,
They should last for years to come provided you keep your electrical system up to par.
I see them on EbayMotors all the time. If you buy used, you do have risk involved (no warranty) but they are typically much cheaper than new. Most people on Ebay are selling reliable parts and are only selling due to major mechanicl failure. Look for the sellers ratings. Search "Chrysler Force" in the boat parts.
I bought two black units for 50 bucks recently for spares. They are from the 80's and still work just fine."

"Jeff, have had good luck with used Force ignitions. Most times Force motors puke out piston rings and toast the head - leaving a decent ignition system on a motor "not worth" rebuilding.

My buddy has a 1990, 90 horse - just finished a rebuild on it (over 2500 hours). During it's life it has toasted 2 coils and 1 CDI box (and then ate it's piston rings)

You can get a brand new CDI for 100 bucks (can dig up the name of the place if you want it - can order online)

Alternately, just watch places like EBAY. I have picked up complete ignitions CDI's, coils, stators etc (as a complete ignition system) for just over 100 bucks.

Except for the trigger (which must match the number of cylinders) any Force with the Blue (boxes) is compatable with each other (ditto the less common "black" boxes)

So it is nice to have a spare for everything - you never know when something will go on you, and if you have a spare you don't miss 2 or 3 weeks of prime boating season waiting for an "expensive" replacement to show up at the local shop...."
