I know of a guy selling a used 318 marine engine with 1350 hrs. I have his notes(that seem legit) that compression #'s are 139,135,135,134,136,142,135,135. it is complete with a BW 1:1 transmission drop in ready. It is raw water cooled but from a fresh water lake up north. He wants $1000. I wish I lived in Florida to get JoeL's but I live in Pa. Does that seem like fair price? A reman long block is $2600 from first mate and I probably should get new manifolds if I go that route. So $1000 for an old running 318 or $3000 for a new engine.

I noticed once you buy all the parts need for log style FWC mannifolds for one engine you can push 750 not including labor

IMO a motor with those comp. values with tranny could be worth 5k plus to you

Its all about cost of replacement vs. repair

IF you plan on running FWCooled, don't buy a RWCooled motor! The rust deposits will clog a heat exchanger constantly.

$2600 for a long block is very high. I paid $1,800 for mine.

If you have need of that trans--and don't have to have a FWCooled motor--that's not a bad price. I've seen Mopars run 2,000 hrs without a problem so the hours (if maintained properly) aren't bad either.

I'd be running the boat on lake erie so it will be raw water cooled again. I have the exact 318 engine with a cracked block but if I bought it I would have a spare alternator, starter, carb, transmission, etc. It seemed like a fair price to me as well. If I bought the long block I would have no spare parts as well as I would have to use all my stuff again.
