Upper unit gear set

"Hi,

I have a 1991 searay

"Hi,

I have a 1991 searay 4.3 200. It has a generation two outdrive and i did not have enough oil in the outdrive so it burned up. I took the outdrive off and can see that the upper unit gear set has burned up. Is there anyway i can replace just those two gears without special tools and extensive knowledge? I see the gears online for about $250. I would love to get away with just replacing them. Is this realistic?

And how would i know the lower unit doesnt have metal flakes in it and is still good to use? when i drained the oil, no flakes came out but when i open the top of the upper unit to look at the gears, you can see metal everywhere.

Can i put an SEI upper unit on the merc lower?

"Let a professional do the work. An SEI top will fit to the LU but the LU should be looked at. A new SEI top will be about the same or less to rebuild your damaged top. Get an estimate for the entire job as a repair and as a replacement top.

To get the allen screw out, soak it w/PB Blaster. Then get the allen wrench set that has a beveled end on it which allows it to fit in a little deeper and also work offset."

"There arent too many ways to remove it. Can try a metric allen wrench and tap it in, other than that the zinc is drilled and removed in sections to get to the bolt part and is cut away."
