Upper unit bearing race

Hello everyone I am wondering if anyone has removed the bearing race in an upper unit of a mercruiser I have a slide hammer but the gap between the housing and the race has a gap that is to small for the arms to grab it properly.Maybe I’m using the wrong tool for the job. So if someone could lead me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Thanks for now

It's common to have to grind down the puller jaws. Buy an extra set because this weakens them.

Some times they fall out when you use heat.

I’ve already ground down the end of the jaws they broke I ground to much obviously. If I were to use heat is it the housing or the race that I heat up .

You heat them together.---The aluminum expand at double the rate as the steel.----So the hole gets bigger and looses its grip on the bearing.

When you raise the temperature of a 3" diameter bearing by 200 F the bearing gets about 0.003 " bigger.----The aluminum housing gets 0.006" bigger.
