Upper shift shaft removal on a 1964 Mercury 850

Hello, trying to remove the upper shift shaft on a 1964 Mercury 850. I've removed the power head and the spring/clip the attaches to the shift rod. I can lift it up about 1 1/2 " then it stops. Don't want to apply any force in case there is something on the end that needs to be removed. From what I can see it is all one piece that just slides over the lower shift shaft. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Got to get it out to remove the swivel bracket to free it up from corrosion. Thanks

Thanks Jeff, there seems to be some type of rubber grommet or something it had to come thru but it came right out with a little pressure. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the replies, do you know if the transom swivel bracket will interchange with some later models. The early 70's swivel brackets look the same but don't know if they'll work. The swivel pin in mine doesn't want to budge and I found some at different places but there early 70's . Thanks

There is a touch of insanity in merc engineers they made alot pf subtle changes sometimes in the same year. If the part numbers dont jive you will have issues.
