Upper shift/control cable

The sterndrive (228) is up and installed to the boat - the lower shift cable is installed and adjusted. - the engine is operational.
This leaves the upper shift/control cable to be adjusted. - I have misplaced the instructions for performing the adjustments.
Does anyone have these instructions or any information.
Appreciate any help
 
You put drive in forward gear manually by pushing cable end in, making sure prop is lock CCw direction

Put shift control in Full forward wide open throttle position with shift bracket cable end NOT attached.

Now adjust barrel on control cable at shift bracket so it lines up with bracket location. Now turn barrel 3-4 turns away from bracket, now install.

Now you need to confirm shifting into forward, neutal and reverse. Engine NOT running.

The short cable may need to be tweeked and or adjust the short cable attachment location which has a short slot in it.
 
Question - this is a 1979 Mercruiser 228 305 4bbl - 228 sterndrive / Helm control - carb lever - shift cable lever - horizontal shift plate
Just a bit confused - I am putting the Carb/gas lever in full WOT position ? - is the shift cable lever in full forward.
I am not sure what the Short Cable is and its short slot

The short shift cable is the cable from the shift bracket to the bell housing which has a bellows on the outside of the boat. Didnt you just replace this?....

Boats with merceuiser stern drives have two shift cables, Long or control cable and Short, short shift cable
