" after reading gary gaulien's post dated 1-3-04 about upper bearing crankshaft play, i too noticed that my 1982 50 hp rude has a slight side to side, front to back movement. holding the flywheel and rocking it foward and aft you can hear the movement better than you can see it. would that be normal? and what would be considered not normal?I checked a 25 hp that i have in the shop and it doesn't seemed to have any play at all. i JUST finnished putting this motor back together after a ring job and i'm just a little concerned. And i was also wondering how a person would test check the fuel pump. "

" Pump the carberetors full,disconnect the fuel supply to carburetors and see if the pump works when engine starts.Did you inspect bearing surface (measure ) the upper main? A roller bearing MUST have clearance in order to do its job. "

" thanks sparky, i'll leave the engine the way it is and the fuel pump is working. i'll have to find out why i have to keep pumping the bulb ever so often as the engine is at idle. "

" The fuel pump is opererated by crankcase pressure pulses.At idle they are not as strong.Check for leaks at connecter o-rings and if you have a plastic tank remove the fuel pick-up assembly.I have seen them with plastic as the tube to the bottom of the tank and fuel had destroyed this plastic. Any air leaking into the suction line will show up at idle.The fuel pump is relatively easy to inspect,just watch for the location of the springs and other bits. "
