"Got a 83 merc 40hp. Noticed that after running it WOT for a few min, it has a small squeek. I suspect its either the upper or lower crank bearings that are getting warm and noisy. Im going to replace them both since if they go out it will prob trash the engine.

My question is, do you have to have any thing special to remove the bearings from the crank (like are they pressed on or something) or will they silde off once the power head is opened up?"

"The good news is the lower bearing is only $20. The bad news is the top, last time I looked it was close $200.
Your going to need a gasket set and 3 crankshaft seals that don't come with the gaskets. 2 for the bottom and 1 for the top. The front intake cover must be removed to get to the bearings. If I remember the lower bearing was pressed on but not to tight that you can't work on it yourself with a puller. With the front cover and bearings removed there will be nothing holding the crankshaft from being lifted out for a new set of rings. Hope you have the manual....."
