"I have a 1986 Mercury XR2 150 hp max rpm 5700-5800. I heard that you can upgrade to a 175/200 by changing the carbs and or reeds, is that true? Is there any down sides to doing that.. Thanks"

"THAT only works if the base engine is a 2.5L block. Most early 150's are not. They are 2.0L. There is not much to be gained here. These motors already are at the 1 HP per Liter milestone. maybe a little more. There is exhaust tuning to consider, too."

"Bandit is totally correct. The XR2's were 2L blocks - the 150 XRI's were the 2.5's. The 2L blocks max out at 150 horse unless you do some custom work (shave the heads, re-port, etc etc) - major dollars

You can turn it easily into a 135 however and save yourself some gas, with no noticable change in "on boat" performance

"Change the carbs - watch ebay - have seen complete sets of carb banks go for 50 bucks - even with rebuild kits, pretty cheap.

And if you run wide open (pulling tubes, ski's etc), saving 2-3 gallons of gas per hour adds up pretty quickly..."
