Upgrade from Ancient Sterndrive

I'm new on the forum, and don't know a ton about Volvo Penta Sterndrives. I'm looking for guidance. Several years ago I bought a 1961 19' Hydrodyne with an original Volvo Penta AQ-100 engine. The sterndrive has no power tilt, just a bracket to hold it up while towing, and no trim of course. After a couple of outings, the engine overheated & seized which I understand old Volvo I-4s were prone to doing. So the boat has been sitting.

I'd like to upgrade to a more modern engine and drive unit. I have a line on a used 4.3L engine that I know is good, but no drive is with it. I'm at a loss to what drive unit would be a match for the engine / hull. I don't need or want anything fancy, would prefer something post-270 but I would like to have power tilt, integral exhaust. I was thinking of an SX, but frankly the various series / models has me a little befuddled.

Any guidance or suggestions?

P.S. Slightly used AQ-100 4-cyl engine and 2 - 56-year-old stern drives for sale. Engine needs work.

Thanks,

Shep

The AQ series stern drive "transom shield" footprint is larger than any Gimbal Suspension stern drive transom units. Therefor the structural transom "cut-out" is too large for a Gimbal Suspension drive.
In order to go with the Volvo Penta SX (a gimbal suspension system), the structural transom would require extensive modification.
And........ you would be moving away from the much better "main suspension fork/pivot tube" geometry of the AQ series.

The GM 4.3L will work with any AQ series stern drive.
If you want a good PT system, look for a C or later stern drive system in the 1.89:1 or 1.61:1 reduction.
The 290 is also an option (less expensive also), but still incorporates the latch system.
