" Hello,
Thanks everyone, this is an update.
I did add some addtional info to the 7/22 original post earlier last week.
I did not find any leaks between the battery and the positive cable. I used both a bulb circuit tester and a multimeter.
The battery was trickle charged the weekend before to 12.5 volts or possibly a little less. It was about the same a week later. It certainly was not as dead as when I began this problem.

I ran the motor at idle around 2000 or so and put the multimeter on the battery and it showed 12.5.
The other motor similarly tested showed 14.5.

Would this reading be related to an under charged battery? This coming weekend I plan to trickle charge the battery overnight and test the running reading again.
Any other advice?
Thanks

Hi Chap. I would pull the bat

Hi Chap. I would pull the battery and have your local auto parts store do a load test for you. Most "good" batteries will actually show a little over 14 volts when they have been on a charger. You probably have a cell going bad and that would explain the difference in your voltage readings. I'm an auto mechanic by trade and have seen this plenty of times. For some reason the battery just will not charge properly even though it will still start the motor after being on a charger. Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply.
Sounds like the prudent thing to do.

"Chap,

My opinion is that the charging system is not charging the battery.

Check the stator output (A/C volts). If you get a good reading here, the problem has to be the rectifier/regulator, or a poor connection or wire. If the reg/rect is not grounded it won't work.

Thanks again.
I'll get the book out and hit the wires with the meter and see what gives. I might switch the batteries first to see if the one I know is ok reads 14.5.
On the learning curve.

" At 2000 rpm if you do not have more than 13 volts at your rectifier your engine is not charging change the rectifier. that is the small inch and a half square thing on the end of the yellow/red wires coming from under the flywheel. check the red terminal for dc volts, check yellow/red for ac volts, gray wire is for the tach. this item blows easy, the yellow/red stator circuit does not.
