Like the title says I'm looking to update/upgrade the magneto/points setup in my 1975 Johnson 15HP to a newer 1985ish CDI system. I ordered everything in that system but the flywheel off eBay. Now that I've spent the money, anybody know if it's possible? Did I waste my money? Will I also need the newer flywheel?

Above are the best sources I know.

Yes it is possible and very worthwhile. I would also see if your flywheel works with the cd ignition.

I should have also mentioned that an outboard guru changed my 15E76R Seahorse ignition to a ‘77 CDI ignition and changed the flywheel as part of that.

And it it has been well worthwhile!!

You will need the CDI flywheel. Some had alternator, nice feature to get if your making the change. Only trouble I have ever had with these is the power pack can fail without notice.

Try to use the points flywheel. Because the 75 used the low tension magneto it is a 2 magnet flywheel. And that system uses a pick up and driver coil similar to a cdi ignition. Worth a try to save a couple bucks.

To address Racer, yes available but uncommon. To address Mr. Scott......I have both flywheels here, I will check in the morning, good idea.
