found an old mercury 700- serial #7110301. Don't know much about it. I'm taking it out on Sunday to check it out. Hasn't run in 2 years and I'm not sure if it was winterized, covered, etc.
If all is well when I go through it, would this motor be worth getting? Opinions on the model: problems, possible repairs, performance?
How much do you think would be a good offer on this motor? Assuming I can get it to turn over and fire?

That would be a 1978, Canadian built model.

Despite being 33'ish years old all the components for it that you would likely need (carb kits, ignition parts, water pump kits) are still currently available at a Merc dealer.

It is a little old for my personal taste, but if it's running and the price is right - given the parts support - it could be a viable motor.

Value is a different matter. Given that it's been sitting it's of zero value to the owner. You could potentially spend 300 bucks or more getting it "back in shape" if you can do the work yourself. If not you "might" find that it will be challenging to find a shop to work on a motor that old and it could be quite expensive (to rebuild 2 carbs you could be looking at 500-600 bucks with parts/labour) and that may just be "to start".

So what's a 33 year old motor worth - well, about 200 bucks (current scrap rate for aluminum) - maybe add another 200 if it's running and I wouldn't go over 500 in any event (and for 500 bucks it would have to be running and look "pretty" as well) :)

Made in Canada!! That's a selling feature right there! Thanks for the advise. This is for a friend. It came on a pretty solid little 15ft run-about tri-hull. I told him to grab the boat if he could get it for under $400. He payed $290 for the whole thing! After I checked it out I figured I could have it going for him if he spends about $300-$500 in parts. I'd say that a 15 ft fibreglass with a 70hp ain't bad for $700. (plus cost of my beers :))
