Uh ohh stupid ignition switch...

Hello, hopefully I can gain some advice. I have a 96 Johnson j40REDS jet drive. The motor was originally just a rope pull and previous owner had electric start installed. The ignition switch wasn't the greatest and I had full intention to swap it out with no luck of finding a suitable switch. Well I noticed the bottom of the switch which the two wires connected to had broke off. Out of stupidity I tried to put it back in together and saw a small amount of smoke but can't see any wires burned or melted. When I try to start it now all that happens is the sylenoid clicks but starter don't turn. It did start with the rope and idled for a few seconds but haven't tried since. What can I look to be damaged?

Disconnect the wires from the starter and jump 12 volts directly to it, and make sure you get the polarity right when you do. If the starter engages you more than likely have a bad solenoid switch.

Yes it has a turn key ignition two prong. I'm having a hard time finding one to replace it with. Is there a way to test the power pack before I change the ignition switch. It still has rope start. As far as the safety start switch it has a jet unit so I'm not sure how that would work? Thanks for the advice.
