Just wondering what the problem is when you have oil in the u joint bellows. i have a volvo penta 275 and was wondering how hard of a fix it is? Thanks

"Jayson, the oil can actually come from two directions.

One; if greases of different types are used for the Primary Drive Shaft bearing lube. Greases that are in-compatable will have an adverse effect on one another, often leaving a thin, less than "grease" type oil. It can eventually leak out past the yoke seal into the bellows.

Two; if the main drive shaft seal has gone bad and transmission oil is leaking into the bellows.

The trans needs to come off.
The four bearing box clamping collar bolts need to be carefully removed.
This allows for the Bering Box and Drive gear to be removed as a unit.
Once out, follow your OEM manual procedure.
Need help... post back here.
Watch for and carefully inventory the small shims within the seal surface spacer.

Tip; For U-joint crosses, use a Spicer 5-1306X bearing cross instead of the expensive OEM cross.

I am believing that it is deff. a seal of some sort in the upper gear box. Just not real familiar with what i should be looking for. i just had the upper gaer box off to replace the bellows.

Not sure where you are, Jayson, but I have quite a few people ship these to me for an over-haul/repair.
I am in Oregon, USA.

Otherwise, one of us may be able to assist you in this.

Install a new Shift Mech "seal" while you are into this!

"Ok heres the scoop. I am having the seal overnighted to me. i am having the local volvo penta dealer that I recently discovered, press the bearing out, put in the new seal, and assemble just the part that is in the little housing that goes in the back of the gear box. with parts and labor im looking at about $100. Ill post agin if i need a hand and thanks guys"

"Jayson, they do not need to press any gear out for a main seal replacement.... not unless they are going to check the Main Drive Gear bearings (of which is an excellent idea)!

Only the "bearing box" assembly needs to be removed from the gear case..... and the clamping collar needs to be removed from the bearing box for this work! (plus dip stick, top cap and shift mechanism)

The AFT drive shaft yoke will be released from the "drive gear" with the un-screwing of one cap screw.

The seal is then totally accessible, as is the seal surface spacer/washer (the one with the very small and critical shims inside).

As long as you have a seal coming, you may as well order both gaskets (2) and all O rings (7)and the shift mechanism seal necessary for the total job.
Just a suggestion!

Be sure that the person doing this is familiar with the AQ series stuff!"

I get what you are saying. onc

I get what you are saying. once I get to that point i would rather have someone experienced do it do to the ease of messing up such a critical piece. I have already been quoted a price for removing it so like you said i will have them check everything and a piece of mind for me its done correctly. i did ask him and they are familiar with the older aq stuff. He said he just recently finished doing a 280. So hope all goes well. I will post next week just to let everyone know how it went. Thanks Again

Well the shop said they couldnt get the seal out. I took out the snap ring and from what I understand the inner metal ring should come out and then the seal. Any input would be great.

Well, you asked for it. Take this to another shop!
I'm sorry, but I find it hard to believe that this seal won't come out. These are among the most easy drives to work on! Anyone trained on these should know exactly what/how to do this.
Perhaps they do not routinely work on this type of drive.

I was afraid of that. They eve

I was afraid of that. They even tried pressing it and couldnt get it. i was told that maybe they have it set up wrong on the press. thats just a duh move. Once I get this straightened out i guess i am looking in baltimore for another dealer couse i think the one im using in pa is the closest one.

"Jayson, FYI.... there are people from various parts of the states who are not able to get this work done locally to their satifaction!
Many of them have shipped these to me for repair!
In most cases it is very cost effective for them.

Your call!

Hey Ricardo appreciate the offer. Do you have a round about price in mind. I can give you my email if you cant discuss this on the forums. Thanks Jayson

I just shot you an email. We'll take it from there."

Well knock on wood my mechanic

Well knock on wood my mechanic got the seal replaced. He just needed some time to work on it when he wasnt getting pulled away from it 10 times a day. Took it for a water test today and as of now everything seems ok. Appreciate all the help and opinions and im sure this wont be my last. Ricardo i will def keep you in mind for next time.

Run the boat, then pull the dip stick and check the oil for any signs of water intrusion.

Checked it along with the bell

Checked it along with the bellows. No oil or water in the bellows and the oil looks like oil. Not milky or anything.
