"Hi everyone,
I am new to this and it took me forever to figure out "Start new discussion" was the way I actually post a question. At least I hope I am doing this right.
So here is my ? Can I put the twin carbs from my 1977 evinrude 140 hp out board on my 1971 Johnson 125hp out board? The linkage looks the same, but the choke set up appears a bit different. I would really appreciate any feedback I can get. I also have a 1974 Johnson 135hp outboard and I was wondering if any parts from the 1977 140 evinrude interchange with either Johnson motor. I know this getting rather long, but since I am asking, I figure i might as well submit all of the ? I have. So here is my last ? for now. If nothing interchanges, is it worth rebuilding my 1977 140 that i got free? The compression reading shows (i'm going off of memory now) for instance 130,130,80,130. So what would you do with it?
Thanks again in advance. I am glad I found this site. It has been the most informative site i have found yet. I do have a seloc manual, but the cutoff year is 1973 to 1978?"

"first question, why do want t

"first question, why do want to move the carbs to the 125. physically they should fit. you will have to re-jet them for the 125, more than likely. then you will have to "modify" the choke in order to make it work. look on the front of the carbs, with the airbox off, there should be a number embossed there. this is the throat size of the carbs. they MAY be different from the 125 to the 140.
personally, the 140 is the best motor of the bunch. pull the head on the side with the low cylinder. MIGHT get lucky and just need a head gasket."

"Thanks, I guess I was just ho

"Thanks, I guess I was just hoping it would be any easy swap while I was trying to find a competent boat mechanic to rebuild mine. I took them apart already (last year) I hate carbs, so I guess that was pretty stupid of me. Then I bought a 1974 Apache with a 135 hp for $300.00 that sat for three years. I couldn't get it to stay running. That is until I found this site! Thanks to all of you who respond to posts like mine, I had that one on the lake yesterday. It still dies out when I enter the no wake zone. I am guessing I will need to adjust the carbs. On a previous post I read, it said to adjust each carb one at a time, am I correct in asuming that means not to touch the next one until I go through the complete process on the first one? When the boat dies I have to play with the manual choke control knob on the motor to get it started again. If I don't leave a small wake it will die out again. it runs great full out and I don't think the tach working correctly. So I guess I will have to back to the seloc book. Thanks again, I will be taking the head off of the 140 soon, also the 140 is missing a few exterior parts that I will looking for if it ends being an easy fix."
