"I'm trying to figure out

"I'm trying to figure out how much fuel these engines will use.
They are powering a blackfin fisherman I am considering buying.
The boat is 27ft and has a 10ft beam.
I can afford to buy the boat, just trying to figure out it I can afford to run her.
any help/ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thank you."

"Lots of variables involved. all the owners of the bigger blackfins i know have diesels which doesn't help. you can figure 10-15 gal/hr/engine up on plane. You can always tune the carbs to make it optimal. Prop specs and the gear will drive fuel consumption too as well as how the engines have been maintained. (and how clean the bottom is.)

Why don't you ask the seller what it burns and then ask to see the maintenace records.

don't forget 'afford to run her' is more than payments and fuel - slip, insurance, and maintenance add up quick, especially with two under the floorboards."

"Don't knowe if this helps

"Don't knowe if this helps, but my Chrysler 360s burn 8 to 8.5 GPH at 2,500 rpm cruise. Many people run their engines way harder than necessary--I hear them screaming along at 4 grand down the river.

I have a 29 Tiara Open with the 27O's.

Less deadrise and wider beam. The best I EVER got was when I bought her and ran her home light (1.26nmpg).

For normal cruising (3300RPM)and fishing I average 1nmpg.

"That's not all that bad.

"That's not all that bad. Hell, if you want to save gas, buy a trawler, or a sailboat, or stay home, right? Those 400 buck fill ups are something you either accept or leave boating over. So far, we've chosen the former, but....

"Mako mark -thats interesting, I always thought diesel engines would help out a lot with fuel savings, I've actually been searching around more for a boat with diesels, they don't burn less fuel?

Jeff- I hear ya, I always see guys out there with huge boats screaming around for no reason.. I just want to get myself to the fishing grounds!

Mark- thanks for the info on your boat, TIara has a good website that gives good specs on boats, I will look up your boat and compare it to this blackfin i'm looking at.

thank guys for the advice."

"Chris:

the diesels burn less fuel than the gas engines, yes, but at much greater initial expense. There's a gent named david pascoe who's a marine surveyor. he has a two part article on the gas vs. diesel debate. Its worth reading.

Another factor that will drive things is how much gear you pack on the boat. They are ALWAYS faster during the sea trials."

"Chris; You will get 1nm/g.

"Chris; You will get 1nm/g. I've got a 32' cary, also a deep V. The weight you carry will make a difference. So, rough numbers, figure $3/mile."
