"The engines are original and came with this 1984 34’ Sea Ray.
They have 1400 hours on them. I can change most everything on
The engine but when is it time to just have the motors looked
at by a pro. I tried getting budget # from a repair place. Change oil, plugs,
gas and oil filters and some other little things like both oil and gas senders.
I was asked one question, how does the boat run and what are the rpm’s
When you get up to plan. I told him it takes about 30 seconds to get to 20-25
Knots at about 3,400 to 3,800 rpm’s and then I drop the throttle back a little and hang around 3200 doing about 18-20 knots.
I never herd from the guy again. Is my boat running that well were he felt there was no
reason to go further??? I’m confused"

"Possibly... Although I would keep a good eye on them. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is a good philosophy, although I would still be prepared for when it does break. It is a boat, it will break.

If the performance has not changed over the life of the boat it is pretty safe to assume everything is OK. I wouldn't cut my season short to do it, but you may want to remove the heads over the winter, have them reconditioned while inspecting the cylinders and pistons. It is always a good idea to remove and inspect your manifolds and risers every few years, replacing them as necessary. Based on your statement, it sounds like you are already maintaining the engines well. This is supported by the longevity and performance you are still getting.

At 22 years old, the engines are well passed their "normal" life expectancy although I have commercial accounts who put 3000 hours a year on their engines.

All things considered, I would start planning for a repower, maybe not for a few years, but at the cost of new motors, it is never too soon to start saving.

IT JUST SHUTS DOWN THE TAC. DROPS TO 0 RIGHT B4 .I CAN START IT RIGHT UP RUNS FOR ABOUT A MIN. OR TWO DOES THE SAME THING.CKED. FUEL & CARB. OK,I CKED. WIRES &CONECTIONS OK.CAP &ROTOR OK.ONLY THING LEFT SEEMS LIKE MODULE IN DIST. JUST LIKE TO BE SURE B4 DROPPING 130.$ON NEW MODULE..FRANK"

I don't remember what year they started using system relays but if you have them you might want to start by dropping $12.00 before moving on to the expensive parts.
