Turning key blows fues

On my 1996 115 HP Mercruiser everytime I turn the ignition key it blows the 20 Amp in-line fuse near the starter. The motor goes up and down from the switch on the motor so I know it is getting power. There has to be a short somewhere but I do not know enough about the signal pathe to be able to trace it. Suggestions please? The gauges come on for about two seconds before it blows.

Start looking for it. Begin w/the key switch. Power is distributed by red and purple wires. Check for a wire touching metal. It could even be some corrosion touching ground.

A couple of points of clarification. The boat started fine a week ago after being stored all winter. I accidentally hooked two small grounds to the positive terminal (not the main ground). I am wondering if this caused the problem and exactly what it could affect.

Oh oh...it's blowing fuses...you fried something...voltage regulator, switchbox, maybe coils...you are going to have to test everything.
