trying to interchange lower unit

Have '83 J25TECTE without a lower unit .Wondering about the best way to determine if a unit will fit. What to look for. Thanks
 
Thanks racerone, there is an opening as described in the exhaust housing.

Judging by the picture you should do a complete evaluation of this motor .------Get it running perhaps.-----Then worry about finding the correct lower unit !
 
+1 on try and get it running first or at the least do a compression test and check for spark with a open air spark gap tester. Most any 18-25hp split case gearbox will work with the proper driveshaft. Racer will know the years compatible.
 
Don't let the appearance fool you, it runs almost as good as a new one. The lower unit was destroyed by a lack of oil. We already had it running and determined it was well worth fixing.

No crystal ball needed. Wouldn't think of fixing if it wasn't worth it. Just need to know how to determine what will fit. Thanks for any help. No answer, I'll assume no one knows.
