"Hello everyone,
This is my first post here. Have been searching for help on iboats.com. Here is my situation.

New parts as follows
Stator - P/N - 0763771
Timer Base (CDI Electonics) P/N 133-1251
Power Pack (CDI) P/N 113-1726
Coils(3) (CDI) P/N 183-2303

Engine info- 1977 Johnson Model#70EL77S
Excellent compression#'s 120,121,120

I have hooked all parts up and when I go to set the timing using the service manual here is what is hapening.

I am having to screw in the timerbase stop all the way in to show me 17deg. advance. the timerbase only has a movement of maybe 1". I have also tried the Joe Reeves timing method. When I wired it up, I placed sensor#1 on 1, sensor#2 on 2, Sensor#3 on three.

I tried it on the water this morning, but had no luck. Is there something wrong with the wiring?

How can I test to make sure that the Sensor#1,#2 and #3 that come from the timer base are correctly labled.

Any ideas? what should I do.

"Ryan.... One thing I neglected to state in another post......

Check the center magnets on the flywheel. Some flywheels have the sensor magnets secured with epoxy rather than being an all metal assembly.

I've seen a few of the epoxy setups start to melt down which resulted is having the sensor ring assembly turn somewhat. If this is the case, replace the flywheel."

"Joe,

Thanks for the reply,

"Joe,

Thanks for the reply, you are everywhere....

I looked at my flywheel, and it appears to be good. I am looking at a 1976 70 hp johnson in the local area for sale that is running for parts. I had CDI change out the timer base for a rebuilt original. Got it home and the same timing. I was hoping that it was in the timer base. If I purchase this engine. I plan on taking the flywheel off of it and seeing what timing that I get. I will check TDC. the main reason that I plan on getting the engine for spair parts is the center portion of the powerhead that hooks up to the lower unit has two of the areas where the bolts go into cracked and 2 with sheared off bolts. I wish people would do things right when they repair or work on things, so that I don't find surprises. I tell you my wife is at whitends with me."
