Trouble with timing 2002 60hp 2 Stroke

Hey guys, I have a Mariner 2002 60hp 2 stroke 3 cylinder. I am having trouble timing the engine after replacing the trigger with an aftermarket trigger. The motor has spark on all cylinders but does not want to start and backfires occasionally, I checked the timing as per the service manual on spark plug #1. The timing is so far out, moving the trigger from one extreme to the other without the throttle lever connected shows between 40-60ish degrees B.T.D.C. Its so far out that in any postion it isn't aligning with the timing indicator window.
I have checked the flywheel key is not sheared. I don't understand how the timing can be so far out, is this due to a faulty trigger or maybe wired incorrectly?

The four wires on the new trigger were black and white, violet, brown, white. I wired it white to white, violet to violet, black and white to black, and brown to black. I figured the only ambigious one was brown to black.

Any ideas??

When you replaced the trigger, you had to remove the stator to do it. Some stators had different holes for different applications. Do you have the stator mounted in the correct orientation as when it came off? That will effect the timing.

Hey Fitz yea I had considered this, I did some googling and some people said it doesn't affect the timing and some said it does. Unfortunately I didn't mark it before I removed the stator so I just went of which holes has the impressions of the bolts on them. Is there a way to determine the correct orientation? Or should I just trial and error every position.

If the timing is far to advanced right now should I rotate the stator clockwise or counter clockwise?
Thanks

Look for screw scratches were the previous screws were attached. The stator magnets are relative to the flywheel magnets. The stator provides ignition voltage and rectified charging voltage for the battery. Did you buy a CDI trigger or something off of amazon? In a clockwise rotation, turning the stator more clockwise would diminish advance,(later timing) but I've had 3 cocktails. Trust but validate...

Yea that's what I did to figure out what holes the screws were in, although it could still be in the wrong position. It's a no name one from china but looks identical to cdi electronics, probably the same. Okay thanks I'll try one hole clockwise and report back. Appreciate the help.

I tried rotating the stator in three seperate positions, it made no difference to the timing. I ended up buying a second hand mercury trigger and it fixed the problem. Guess it was a dodgey aftermarket trigger.
