Trouble Removing the Sidemount Control Box Handle

I've removed the set screw from the handle crank, but the handle is still hung up.

Is there a trick to removing the handle?

I need to get a look inside the mechanism as the rotation forward catches before the point where the throttle cable starts to advance the carb off idle. Maybe the same failure in the mechanism is keeping the handle from coming free.

Any thoughts on this theory?

I believe if you look at the bottom of handle (large chrome part) it looks like there is a dark spot. On other versions there is a allen set screw that must be loosened
It looks like a open ended slot and if there is no set screw, move handle til you find it

As stated in the original post, I have removed the set screw, but I am unable to pull the handle off. Seems as though the center button is still anchored to something behind the handle.

The button has to be pulled also although i am not 100% sure it ia pulled out or unscrews.

Reading from my cell. Miss words sometimes...

The button is to disengage shift for throttle only.

Also that apoears to be very old. It may require addition force to pull off the splines...could be corroded

I'm thinking early 70s was the cut over from screwed on to pop on style. My early spring 1970 is still screw on style.

Bingo. The button unscrewed, and I was able to get the control box off the panel and opened up. No corrosion, but plenty of goop and gum up. I'll clean it and apply new grease and see if it will work as it should.

Thank you (kghost and Droid) for your helpful replies!

You're welcome...

Now about this issue. I'm thinking you have too much forward gear adjusted into the shift cable travel. Fwd gear should be shortening of the cable at the transom end. If gearcase is out of travel because you have a mal-adjusted cable it will create a tension in the control in essence causing the roller to bind in the cam groove within the control box.
Disconnect the shift cable at the aft end & see if control box functions smoothly.
It is also possible one or both cables are binding from old age, a too tight bend or kink.
That being said, a good cleaning & lube with white lithium grease certainly won't hurt.
