1987 150...i put a new crank shaft in...i finally get it started and it runs a little rought...its idling at 2200..i know too high but i can fix that..i swap out the vro for old style pumps with pre mix...after idling for 5 minutes i shut it down but it will not restart....it just cranks..bulb is firm but not super hard...fuel drips from carbs when i squeeze bulb...why wont it restart? how do i troubleshoot this?

Do you have spark???-------------Is / was the flywheel nut tightened properly ( torqued ) to specification ????-----------------Kill switch checked on the control box ??

actually the fly wheel does need to be torqued. what would that have to do with it not re-starting? just curious. ill check spark too

The flywheel key may be sheared if you left the flywheel somewhat loose --------------AND IT DOES HAVE A WHOLE LOT TO DO WITH STARTING THE MOTOR !!!!!!----------------------The key puts the flywheel in the right position to control ignition timing !!!----------------The taper drives the flywheel.----------------On an outboard like yours the flywheel does the normal job of a flywheel in that it makes it run smooth.-------------It also has magnets to help charge the battery / initiate pulses for the CDI ignition and the magnets around the hub control the timing.-------Do you have any kind of manual ???

i do have the manual but i forgot to torque it. it was tight but i have to torque it to the proper specs.. this exact same thing happened yeaterday too but the battery dies trying to restart it. why the same thing 2 days in a row?

i hope i didnt offend you by asking how it matters. i just wanted to know for my own knowledge

thanks

Well if the battery is in poor condition and somebody has fried the starter ( very common and easy to do on those V-6 motors ) then the motor will not crank fast enuff for it to have spark.-------------Just not the same as " grandpa's " 283 chevy.

After you torque the flywheel and replace the battery.......

After the motor is run and does not restart, check for spark with a spark tester. You should have a nice crisp blue spark. If it does not pass the spark test then we will know where to direct you next. If it passes the spark test, then it is a fuel problem.
