Trouble finding information with motor serial number

Hello,
have an older Mercury 9.8 outboard motor with serial number A177451. I have searched this s.n. and find no information. I am needing help finding year and model for this engine for repair and service. Also the motor is stamped with lightening. Any advice? Thank you

Where specifically did you get that number? You are correct, It does not come up...

My bestest guess is a 1985 model.----It has brown / copper coloured decals ??

Its on the plate labled serial number, with all the mercury address info. I have pictures is there a way I can post them?

Are there brown / copper stripes ?----Yes post pictures that often makes it easy too.

There you go-----They only used those decals in the 1984 / 1985 model years.------My kristall ball worked again.
