trottle issue

I have a 1992 220 sea ray with a 5.7 merc inboard. I was on the lake yesterday eve when it acted as if the neutral rev switch had been pushed. the boat will not go into gear, but will rev w/o pushing the buttom on the the trottle control. I am not for sure if its a linkage issue or if the switch is out. Has anyone ever had an issue like this and does anyone has a fix idea?

The pair of yellow/red stripe wires are the neutral safety circuit. It's best to have a manual to disassemble the shifter. You might try two thin slotted screwdrivers to pry out the button at the same time. Squirt it w/WD-40 first. I've taken these completely apart before and they are a PITA to reassemble w/o breaking the NS switch.

so how do i unstick the shifter assy.? i can see a set of yellow wires running out of the back of the assy. and another set of four wires. could the switch be bad and how hard is is this to fix?

Ayuh,.... The problem ain't the Wires,... It's the Controller's mechanical lock out... or a bad cable..
