trim will not go up or down but can hear motor run when you engage up or down

1993 mercury 40 hp engine will not trim up or down , you can hear it run in both direction but will not move , had it the shop in last year and they changed some module switchs not for this problem and i put it up for the year then when i started this year it runs great but no trim motor and
switchs are working any ideas would help

Did it work when you picked it up? Have you checked the fluid level?

you can hear it run in both direction but will not move

It may be running but not producing any pressure...pump motor may be shot or brushes worn down to nubs.

if it is a new trim motor then somebody may have installed the wrong driveshaft. I get four or five systems a year to rebuild with your exact symptoms and it just turns out to be a new trim motor with old driveshaft. There are four or five different driveshaft lengths. One for every motor & pump combination. If you use the wrong driveshaft then it can either lock up or slip out of gear.

Since you hear the motor spinning then only possible problems are driveshaft or it needs a rebuild. The systems are sealed airtight. They can't get low on fluid until after something is wrong. So if the motor spins and the driveshaft is right ... there is nothing left but rebuild.
