Trim/tilt 115 Mariner 6

Please is there anybody that can help me!My t/t worked perfect except the wire got hot when i trim the motor,so i strip the motor and found a pasty like stuff in the armature(oil and water mix) i cleaned it fix wire that mite be a short for the smoke,after put back together now it would not operate just hear a click sound. Test relays everything its fine,I wonder if I must put new brushes or what please help

a brush probably sprung out during assembly. If you can not get to brushes while positioning armature then try using a single strand of very fine wire to hold brush in place.

also check the thermal breaker. sometimes they get gunk in them. clean gently with thin nail file.
