Trim sender/guage issues

Hi,
I bought a boat and released that the trim gauge was not working because there was no sender. I bought a new sender (8M0098273) and put it on. I have no way of confirming if it is the correct part because i can not find the serial number of the motor anywhere. The freeze plug number is 9506510 and that search yields no result. Maybe the power head has been changed.
Once the gauge is installed subtle trim movements of the motor don't show on the gauge. Large movements are required to be indicated on the gauge but once the needle starts to move, if you go back a little the needle doesn't move.
I took the sender off and made tiny movements of the tab by hand and that showed up on the gauge.
Looking at the 2 photo's of the engine (https://flic.kr/s/aHskwoP2Zh) there is a lip that surrounds the the mating point for the trim sender. These photos can have a bit of an optical illusion. Just remember the area in the center is a groove of rectangle shape that goes into the page. it sometimes looks like a pyramid coming out of the page, trippy.
To make the trim sender fit, that lip had to be grinded down flush the the body.
Any help would be great.
Cheers
Nick

Sorry, my computer played up and i had to write the post twice.

Its a 90 hp.

How did you come up with the year as 88. When i bought the trim sender i said late 80s because of the colour markings so thats good.

The pump works.
If i trim the motor a little the gauge will not register. Its not until large trims the the gauge registers.
I have also just released that when i push the trim buttons the trim gauge jumps a little to the up position. It does not matter which way i trim the motor.
Considering the gauge its moving to the up position, I think there must be a short somewhere leaking the resistance from the sender.

Some how I missed the word :Gauge" in your original post. Sorry.

I just replaced the trim sending unit on my 2000 75ELPTO and the gauge wouldn’t do anything. So I figured the gauge was also bad. Performed a “gauge test” and it appears ok. So after much troubleshooting I realized the ground on the motor foot (sender grounded to lower unit), and all metal was different than the electrical ground on the motor electrical grounding and also the controls under the gauge console. So I had to add a grounding wire from the motor electrical grounding point to the pontoon frame. And it immediately started working!?

The sender can be easily tested with a analog ohm meter if the needle jumps while trimming up and down the sender is bad. Easily bench tested as well all it is is a pot (variable resistor) the needle should sweep smooth as you spin the sender.

Understood completely. Potentiometer. What I don’t get is why my motor is not providing a ground to my pontoon aluminum frame...
wheni ohmed out the motor grounding points, none of them were bonded to the frame....
