Having probems with an itermit

Having probems with an itermittent T & T.

I got a sticky black substance at both connectors to the RELAYS where the leads go IN. Is that OK or is something melting?

Those relays should detach from the connectors like a plug ... right ?

Any way to test both the relays and the connector assemblies ?

thanks

"That sticky substance is a sp

"That sticky substance is a special grease that prevents electrical shorts and assures proper terminal contact.

Yes, the relays detach from the connectors like a plug.

If one relay fails and the PTT operates in only one direction, switching the relays change that direction which proves a relay failure.

This intermitent problem.... explain."

"Let me preface this. I am in

"Let me preface this. I am in the process of switching out from a 1981 Merc 70HP to 1987 Evinrude 90 HP on a 1968 17' Boston Whaler. Since I don't know what I am doing but want to learn this is a work in progress.

I am putting in a Morse MT3 control box and an isolated trim switch. I had issues with the harness coming out of black box but replaced it and also had a bad wire (blue) on main trim harness and repaired that(splice needed). Hooked old throttle with trim to harness. Went up and down a couple of times. Thought that was end of issue. Next day made some leads to new switch but switch did not work. Put old switch on again. No go. Went back next day with manual and VOM. Tried new switch before running tests. Can't remember but I think it worked for a little while and then stopped. I know when I got to the part where testing green wires at connector and had to stick the probe thru the gunk to hit terminal to look for current, when I held the button down it started working again, both up and down. I figured "FIXED". I started working on my thermostats (another issue) and a little later my father who has been helping me asked about the trim. I said it was fixed and he asked to see. I can't remember again if it didn't work at all but bottom line when I left yesterday only the up was working. I wouldn't be surprised when I go there tonight that both up and down work or neither work."

"Worked pretty much all night.

"Worked pretty much all night. Had to jiggle connection at DOWN RELAY to get down working, only once though. 3 things.

1) UP - struggles to get out of STERN BRACKET.

2) DOWN - when fully extended, the TRIM RODS take a good 10 seconds before they go back in and then she starts trimming down.

3) TRIM FLUID - predecessor used DEXTRON II. I added BRP."

"The 2nd statement (Trim R

"The 2nd statement (Trim Rods). I assume that you're saying that the trim rods pull in completely before the engine starts to lower. If so, the steering/tilt tube is too tight and is grabbing the engine solidly, preventing it from dropping on its own.

This extreme tightness would also result in the
#2 statement problem..... getting out of what you call the stern bracket (Transom Brackets).

In normal operation, the main center tilt cylinder would pull the engine down to the trim rams and then, and only then, would the trim rams start to retract."

I added a 6" jack plate and am using original steering cable. I'd say thats another 6 - 10 inches. Could that cause the " TIGHTNESS " or maybe it just needs lubrication ???
