Trim instrument not working BF 150, 2005

Hi
Need some help to troubleshoot why my trim instrument not is working.
Needle doesn't move at all at the Faria instrument.
I made a test with a newer instrument where the needle instead went to top position.
Boat has sometimes been used wintertime and the sender might be damaged I guess, but how do I measure this?
Also the rpm meeter is not working correct, sometimes it shows way to high rpm, above 7000.
Anyone know if I can use a later instrument here? Faria is mounted today and I have a newer model available, think it is teleflex?

My trim gauge quit working a few years back, did the same with the needle pointing to the top.
I disconnected as I can't say that i would use it anyway ?
I guess if you can't see your motors it could save you some trouble.

RE: trim gauge...

I assume at one time the trim guage worked. If it was there and used with some other brand of engine, it will not work with the Honda. Most other brands use a variable resistance from ground. The Honda uses a variable voltage.

First make sure that the sending unit is not stuck. It is a lever located just above the trim unit on the motor. You will have to raise the engine all the way up to check it. Make sure you lock the engine in place before you stick your hand under there. If it is physically stuck, you might be able to free it up, but most likely it will need to be replaced.

If all that is working ok, the connect a voltmeter at the gauge ....negative to the ground terminal and positive to the post where the sending unit wire it connected. Raise the motor up and down and watch for a varying dc voltage. If you get it, then it is most likely the gauge.

Yes you can use a more current gauge, just be sure that it is a guage for a Honda.

As for the tachometer, the normal setting for the Honda 135 on a Faria gauge is the #1 setting. It the tach is acting up like you said... sometimes if you rotate the pointer up and down its range (to clean off the contacts), sometimes that will get the tach to settle down. Make sure when you get it to the #1 setting that it pops out a little and is definitely in that position.

If you change to the Teleflex tachometer, at that time use the 2P setting.

Make sure you are getting 12v to the ground and power lead at the gauge.

Thanks for the info hondadude
The voltage is 7,4 volt in all positions.Guess that I need a new sender.
The arm on the old one is possible to move but still no change in voltage. Will need further investigation but it is a little bit tricky to reach it now with the boat in water
The new tacho works perfect with the recommended settings
