Trim gauge compatibility question

Fishing buddy of mine has a 19

Fishing buddy of mine has a 1990 Ranger with 1990 Yamaha controls. He just bought a 2005 Yamaha VMax and was told the trim gage wouldn't work with the new motor. Is there any way to modify or adapt the new trim sender to the trim gauge?
