Trim Gauge and Sending Unit

Hey yall, new guy here. Just bought my first boat not long ago. 2000 Logic V17 with a 2000 Johnson 50 HP. I am currently replacing my trim tilt cylinder seals due to the infamous top cap leak. While I was down there the other day I noticed a sensor attached to the outboard which I know is a trim sensor sending unit. (had to remove it to knock out the trim tilt top pin). Well I don't have a trim gauge nor is there a spot where there ever was one. Fuel and Speed is all I have as far as gauges go. I followed the wires and they just go up into the cowl and disappear in the engine somewhere. My questions are, what is the point in a sending unit without the gauge and how would I marry the gauge and sending unit if I bought a trim gauge?? Thanks!

The trim sensor wires (2) normally end up under the dash. You'll need to trace the wire more carefully to see exactly where they lead to. You would want to have a ohm meter attached to those two wires wand observe the reading as you manually move the sensors lever up and down "slowly". The meter needle should move smoothly, no sticking, no jumping. The sensor is no doubt 16/17 years old...... check it first.

A new gauge would come with instructions.... it doesn't require rocket science mentality.

Thank you I didn't think about the possible age of the sensor. I do have an ohm meter and will check it. Thanks
