"I am having problems with trimming my motor DOWN. It will go UP every time and will occassionally go down. Otherwise, when I go to put it down it only clicks at the relay. I replaced the relay today but it didn't fix the problem. When it does go down I haven't done anything differently (no banging on the solenoid, etc.). I will switch then switch to up and then back to down and it may or may not work - about 95% of the time it will not work - just the click. HELP!

Thanks - and I am pretty green at this. I followed my owners manual but it wasn't too helpful."

"sounds like the trim motor is going out, when it doesn't go down check for power at the motor. If you have power at the pump then the brushes or motor is out"

Try switching your relays with

Try switching your relays with each other and check to see if your problem is the opposite than it was. When you power one relay the other is completing the return (ground) side of the circuit.

"David,

At the risk of sounding ignorant, how do I do that? The detachable part that I replaced is exactly the same for both. Are you talking about swapping the wiring around?

Thanks,

Lee"

"You have 2 relays, one with a green wire (down) going to it and one with a blue wire(up) going to it. The trim pump motor can spin clockwise and counter-clockwise depending on polarity applied to motor. This is done by supplying 12v through one relay while the other is supplying the ground when it is not activated. For example, if you wanted to go up , the up relay supplies 12v+ to the blue wire and the 12v- is supplied to green wire through the down relay(not activated) and vice versa. So by swithching them you can check for bad relay if your problem is reverse of what it was."

"David,

I swapped them around and it went up and down in reverse every time! Swapped it back and it now works perfectly. I must have simply had a bad connection! Woohoo! Sure do appreciate it.

Thanks,

Lee"

"That was my next area to check. Glad you got it to work again, still I would pull the relays out and check the spade terminal type connections for tightness and/or corrosion. Also keep the relay you replaced its probably still good."
