Trim and tilt issues

"I am still trying to add trim

"I am still trying to add trim and tilt to my 85' 90 hp evinrude that never had it.

My controls have the button. I picked up a unit with a 3 wire motor off ebay. I also picked up what was advertized as a solenoid box from a different seller, but I think it's a relay box. There are six screws doewn the middle, one "side " looks like it handles green, the other, blue.

If I futz around with odd connects, I can get it to retract and go up; the problem is if I connect both of the heavy gausge wires at the same time from the motor (the green and blue), when I use the switch, the wires heat up and the motor cleary sounds wrong.

Do I need a two wire motor? Can I swap a 2 and 3 wire unit with this trim unit?"

"you need to wire in a solenoi

"you need to wire in a solenoid,..on the 3 wire setup....joe reeves has an excellent wire diagram, maybe he will see this today.the solenoid,is for the blue wire, the up wire.green, does not need one.the relay box setup,is for the newer 2 wire motors, which are dual polarity."

"The down solenoid isn't needed as gravity takes effect there. However the up mode absolutely requires the solenoid as shown here.

"Bingo. After playing with the unmarked solenoid, the unit works like a charm...Now I've got to install it. On the existing manual unit, the 2 lower inner nuts snapped off and I drilled them out. Is there any trick to removing the peg that holds the top of the hydraulic cylinder in place? It does not want to budge. I removed the two clips. Does it go out one side vs another?"

"That top pin can become exceedingly tight due to corrosion etc. The cure is to use a hand held propane torch with a blow torch tip to heat the aluminum surrounding the pin, then a heavy duty hammer and a drive pin/punch to knock the pin out. It comes out either side."
