having trouble pulling flywheel hub on 1987 mercury classic 50. removed flywheel and nut/washer, and attached a puller to hub. it is being very stubborn. does anyone have any advice, please?

Tighten up your puller so that there is a fair bit of pressure on it and then give it a few sharp taps with a mallet (or a hammer if you don't have a mallet - just if you slip with a mallet it often causes less damage :) ) - hit the (bolt) that you tighten down.

Sometimes just that bit of shock will be enough to persuade the flywheel to let go of the crank

thanks for the reply galamb. have given the puller bolt several Sharp taps, to no avail. i have applied marvel mystery oil to the hub, and let it soak overnight. tightened puller down again and tapped bolt. no dice!

Do you have air? An impact is the way to go. The hammering action of the impact seems to do the trick. That and a few whacks with a mallet around the edges. It should come off. Just make sure your puller bolts are all the way threaded in. Last thing you want is to pull the threads out of the flywheel.

Thanks to all~applied a different type of penetrating oil, used impact to tighten up puller, and watched a movie with the kids. when i returned, the puller was loose and the hub was free! i guess when things don't get taken apart for 25 years, they tend to stick together! thanks again.
