Trasmission leak

1987 34 searay sundancer,454 crusaders,borg warner velvet drive transmission v-drive. Leaking fluid from out put shaft seal. Does anyone know if you can replace the seal by removing the rear bearier cover instead of pulling the transmission out of the boat?

older vd's have 6 bolts holding in the bearing carrier. Is that what you have? If so, It's many times possible to do this job in the boat.

That is what i have. It looks like that is the easiest way to go.Was just wondering if anyone had done it this way before.
