Need to change the transom do i just remove the outdrive(its a 120 mercruiser in/ob)or have to remove the engine also or just back it up,new to posting but not to forum.

The engine and OD need to come out. Are you keeping the aluminum outer skin? If not, make a cardboard template of it to cut out the new one. If it's a wood interior, you'll want to take measurements of the thickness of the wood at all of the openings for reference. Use a good exterior plywood to laminate the different thicknesses. Use nothing but epoxy or polyesther glue but not together. I prefer epoxy but it costs more. Cut all of your pieces to fit and then seal all of the holes drilled and sides, ends and back surface attached to the aluminum with CPES Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealant. When cured, stack all the panels together with epoxy glue between them and bolt them together in place to cure. You can apply a layer of 20 0z. fiberglass sheeting for strength if wanted. The Best Way

"Ayuh,.......

The Best Way I found to accomplish The Transom Job on My 74 Starcraft Islander was,.....

Remove Everything that's attached to the transom,.... Every Screw, Bolt,+ Rivet you can find, You'll get to the 1s you Can't find, As you find them.....
Then drill out the Rivets that hold the Top Plate over the transom,.... All the Rivets,+ abunch of Screws later,+ it'll be free......
Then the old rotten transom can be Jacked out of the hull,.. I used a Wagon Jack thru the transom cut out....This is when you find all the screws,+ rivets you missed earlier too.....
Then you just fab up a replacement piece of Plywood,+ reverse the process you just went thru,....
Just be Sure to replace All of the Screws, Bolts,+ Rivets,......They're All important.....

Btw,.......
Your Driveline will consist of 3 large pieces,+ Abunch of boxes full of smaller parts, sitting in the corner of your shop,.....
Take the time to get the "Stuff" out of your way,.....
This is a Major Refit,+ you'll want All the room you can make.........

Thanks Guys i knew it was not going to be a fun job will have to wait till spring not enough room in my garage right now and its too cold to do outside here in Canada right now.
