Transom bracket

Hi all. New here,go easy on me:). I have an old 850 mercury four with bad powerhead, good trim, twin ram style, and a 60hp triple with no power trim. The 60 has a similar bracket, even has "ears' like it could have had the same trim rams. Question, will the 60 bolt on the transom clamp from the 850? I,m very mechanically inclined, but I usually work with OMC's. My old Starflite is resting in pieces due to a busted lower unit, and my backup motors are Mercs. Anyone tried this?

Thanks

Wasn't going to swap the powerhead, was needing to know if anyone has adapted the trim and/or transom brackets to the 60 leg. I need powertrim on the 60,I have a severe back injury and not able to "manual tilt" the motor anymore. Money not there for a aftermarket trim unit a
for awhile.

The tower is radically different on those two motors.

Have you looked for another 850 power head? A few out there.

Jeff

PS: What year is it?

Its a 76-77 model. Runs but will not idle,130psi compression on all four, but no vacuum. Oddly it pulls like a freight train if you get it to open up and will push the boat in the low to mid 40mph range. But the vacuum is so low it won't operate the fuel pump anymore. I know it needs rebuilt. I'm not in a position to build it right now financially, but have all the time in the world to do it. Funny how that works. The 60 needs a stator but runs like a top,the wires are getting crunchy and one yellow one is gone. Was blowing some cobwebs out with air,and the wire just blew away. Gotta love them merc wires :)

I know the problem: The bore is worn all to hell. The motor has so much blow-by the inlet charge is polluted to the point it won't idle down and makes so little power at low speed it dies if you shifted it into gear. Sound familiar? Sorry.

Post a couple of pics.I transferred a trim unit from a '79 115HP to a '69 Merc 800.I just bolted the trim brackets to the side of the engine brackets and it worked no problem.I later changed the whole saddle to the 115 saddle and it still works no problem. What year is the 60HP?

The first is attached to the complete 115HP saddle, the second is the original Merc800 brackets. You'll note two different boats. That was the reason I put the 115 saddle on as I was transferring the engine to the restored, early '70's Shakespeare.

I finally figured it out. Had some help over today, the trick is use as many parts off the 85hp bracket as possible, and swap them onto the 60 transom clamp. My 60hp had the swivel bracket that could go either way,but the 60 is narrower,so you'll have to have the shock mount that mercury calls it,and the lower long bolt with nuts on it for that transom clamp. The rest is academics. I don't have them,so I'll have to order them but at $85 and $22.50,and not gonna use it under power,i may be able to fab something up ;).

Great looking motor haventaclue.

Thanks for all the help folks. The other forums are good at telling you how to pick curtains for your cabin cruiser,or what prop polish is best for a 28 pitch super chopper cleaver prop on a 14.5 liter bridgeport optimax, but simple questions about older outboards are answered with "its junk, you need a new 1400hp motor".
