"Well I guess the topic about

"Well I guess the topic about says it all.454 with Borg warner straight drive 2:59 reduction. My starboard unit over last season started to make a mild zinging type noise at 1300 or so rpm, but not at idle or on plane.Fluids are not low or look or smell burnt, but the port does not do that.Thought perhaps the boat in a certain direction might have 1 side gear loaded and the other side at ease, but turned around and did the same. Not sure if this a problem at all in the making, but was concidering switching to synthetic tranny fluid to help any possible starving of fluid...Todd"

"Changing fluid won't cure

"Changing fluid won't cure it, just contaminate the oil. It's not good to mix oils, especially when you can't get all the old oil out which is the case here).

Are you SURE it's coming from the trans and not the damper plate that connects the flywheel to the trans? The springs in there might simply be rattling around and vibrating at some engine speed.

changing the fluid won't h

changing the fluid won't help a starvation issue.

"Zings" are usually bearling surface based and drivelines are really good a propagating sounds. Many times separating the shaft coupler will help to find the culprit.

The synthetics I've seen are compatible with the natural based fluids so I don't see any concern if you drain out the old.

"If I am not working on 15 oth

"If I am not working on 15 other boats like I have been the past 5 weeks, I will try and find out more info. Can't wait till all my friends boats are in the water.I really do not know much about these trannies as I have never been inside one and believe they would be easier to rebuild than a turbo 350 or 400 which I have done many....your friend Todd"
