Transmission issues

I have a 1981 silverton 31 c borg Warner v drives last I had a boat Machanic work on the starboard tranny clutch plates packs or whatever they are called so now I have forwarded and reverse all good last I had both on the port engine all of a sudden while putting it on the yard trailer lost forward on the port . Do your think it’s in the shifter I had one guy on here said it could be the lever shifter behind the engine that would be great if something is not lining up . The boat has been a floating Condo for 2 seasons before every one at the marina said not to take it out . Just to put it out in our cove I could just put out there hopefully it’s not the clutch plates again had to light and move the engine up and back and take out the tranny

could also be the same failure mechanism that took out the starboard gear last year.
